Tour Overview

Designed exclusively for visual storytellers, shutterbugs, and landscape lovers, the Arunachal Photography Tour Package (09 Nights / 10 Days) offers a meticulously paced journey through the most photogenic regions of the Himalayas. Curated by The Holiday Trips' travel photographers, this itinerary prioritizes optimal lighting, extended stops at vantage points, and access to raw tribal cultures.

Your expedition begins in Guwahati, moving into the lush valleys of Bhalukpong and the pristine apple orchards of Dirang, where you will capture the serene Sangti Valley at sunset. As we ascend the dramatic Sela Pass (13,700 ft), the frozen landscapes provide the perfect canvas for alpine photography. You will have four extensive nights in Tawang, allowing you to capture monk portraits at India's largest monastery during golden hours, shoot long exposures of Nuranang Falls, and explore the stark beauty of Bumla Pass and Sangestar Tso.

To make this tour truly unique, we venture into the uncharted Zemithang Valley to document the traditional Monpa tribal life and the ancient Gorsam Chorten. On the return leg, instead of a standard stop, you will explore the hidden heritage village of Shergaon, famous for its stone houses and organic farms. Our specialized drivers ensure you have absolute flexibility for spontaneous photo stops, while we seamlessly handle all complex Inner Line Permits (ILP) and Military drone clearances where applicable.

Photography Flexibility, Drone Permits & ILP

Unlike standard tours, this itinerary offers highly flexible timings to chase the best light. Our local drivers understand the needs of photographers. We handle 100% of your Inner Line Permits (ILP) and Bumla Pass military permits. Note: Drone photography requires specific military clearances in border areas, which our team can assist with upon request.

Photography Highlights

  • Capture stunning sunrise and sunset landscapes at the snow-clad Sela Pass & Sela Lake.
  • Shoot exquisite portraits of monks and ancient architecture at Tawang Monastery.
  • Practice long-exposure photography at the thunderous 100-meter drop of Nuranang Falls.
  • Document the raw, stark beauty of Bumla Pass and the dead trees of Sangestar Tso.
  • Embark on a tribal photography day in the remote Zemithang Valley (Monpa tribe).
  • Explore the hidden, offbeat heritage village of Shergaon for rustic countryside shots.

Day-wise Itinerary

Welcome to the Northeast! Upon your arrival at Guwahati Airport (GAU) or Railway Station, your dedicated photography guide/driver will receive you. Begin your journey driving towards the Himalayan foothills of Arunachal Pradesh. The scenic drive takes about 5 hours, offering ample opportunities to photograph the transitioning landscape from the plains to the hills. At the border gate, we will smoothly complete your Inner Line Permit (ILP) verifications. Check into your hotel in Bhalukpong alongside the Kameng River and capture the evening light over the river. Overnight stay in Bhalukpong.

Start the day early. The drive to Dirang (Altitude 4,900 ft) takes you through winding mountain roads with spectacular views of the Kameng River. We will make frequent stops for landscape photography. By late afternoon, we head to the picture-perfect Sangti Valley, located just a few kilometers from Dirang. Surrounded by towering mountain ranges and dotted with apple/kiwi orchards and quiet rivers, it's an incredible spot for golden-hour landscape shots. Check into your hotel. Overnight stay in Dirang.

Photo Stops Covered:

  • Kameng River Landscapes
  • Dirang Dzong (Ancient architecture)
  • Sangti Valley (Sunset / Golden hour)

Today requires your wide-angle lenses! We depart for Tawang (Altitude 10,000 ft), navigating through the breathtaking Sela Pass (13,700 ft). We will take ample time here to photograph the frozen Paradise Lake and the Buddhist Gateway. Descending from the pass, we make a dedicated stop at Nuranang Falls (Jang Falls). Set up your tripods here for stunning long-exposure shots of the 100-meter waterfall. Arrive in Tawang by evening. Overnight stay in Tawang.

Photography Highlights:

  • Sela Pass (13,700 ft Landscapes)
  • Sela Lake (Reflections/Snow)
  • Nuranang Falls (Long exposure/ND Filters)

Start your day early to capture the morning light and the daily rituals at the Galden Namgey Lhatse (Tawang Monastery), India's largest monastery. It is an excellent opportunity for portrait photography of monks and the intricate architecture. Later, visit Urgelling Lhakhang and the Giant Buddha Statue Viewpoint for panoramic shots of the Tawang Valley. Spend your evening doing street photography in the local Tawang market. Overnight stay in Tawang.

Photography Focus:

  • Tawang Monastery (Morning light/Portraits)
  • Giant Buddha Statue (Wide angle valley views)
  • Tawang Market (Street photography)

Today offers stark, rugged landscapes. Switch to a specialized local union vehicle to navigate the unpaved terrain up to Bumla Pass (15,200 ft), the Indo-China border. The stark, snow-bound landscape is perfect for minimalist photography. On the descent, we visit the surreal Sangestar Tso (Madhuri Lake). The dead tree trunks sticking out of the crystal-clear waters provide excellent foreground elements for your wide shots. Return to Tawang by late afternoon. Overnight stay in Tawang.

Photography Focus & Rules:

  • Bumla Pass: Military area. Listen to the guide regarding restricted photography angles.
  • Sangestar Tso: Symmetrical reflections and dead trees (CPL filters recommended).
  • PT Tso: High-altitude lake views.

Venture deep into the uncharted territories of Arunachal Pradesh. We drive roughly 3 hours from Tawang to the remote Zemithang Valley, located at the borders of Bhutan and Tibet. This area is a goldmine for cultural and tribal photographers. We will visit the colossal 12th-century Gorsam Chorten and interact with the indigenous Monpa tribes, capturing their raw, untouched lifestyle in the Nyamjang Chu river valley. Return to Tawang by evening. Overnight stay in Tawang.

Photography Focus:

  • Zemithang Valley (Tribal Portraits/Lifestyle)
  • Gorsam Chorten (Architectural scale)
  • Nyamjang Chu River views

After breakfast, we begin our return journey towards Bomdila (Altitude 8,000 ft). Use this day to capture any spots you missed along Sela Pass. The changing weather often provides dramatic clouds and completely different lighting compared to your onward journey. Upon reaching Bomdila, check into your hotel. In the evening, capture the sunset over the Gorichen and Kangto peaks from the Bomdila Viewpoint. Overnight stay in Bomdila.

Photography Focus:

  • Sela Pass (Alternative weather lighting)
  • Bomdila Viewpoint (Sunset over Himalayan Peaks)
  • GRL Monastery

Instead of rushing back to the plains, we take an offbeat detour to the hidden heritage village of Shergaon (approx. 2 hours from Bomdila). Nestled in the Rupa Valley, this village is renowned for its organic farms, traditional stone-and-wood houses, and the indigenous Sherdukpen tribe. It is a fantastic opportunity for rustic, countryside photography and capturing the slow-paced village life. Check into an authentic homestay. Overnight stay in Shergaon.

Photography Focus:

  • Shergaon Heritage Village (Rustic architecture)
  • Sherdukpen Tribal culture
  • Organic farms and streams

After capturing the morning mist in the village, we check out and begin our descent to the plains of Assam. The drive to Guwahati takes about 6 to 7 hours. Upon arrival, check into your hotel. In the evening, we highly recommend taking the sunset dinner cruise on the mighty Brahmaputra River. The golden hour reflections on the massive river provide a spectacular end to your photography tour. Overnight stay in Guwahati.

Photography Focus:

  • Brahmaputra River (Sunset / Golden hour)

Your 10-day Himalayan visual expedition concludes today. After breakfast, we will visit the highly revered Maa Kamakhya Temple, an ancient Shakti Peeth located on the Nilachal Hill. Capture the vibrant spiritual energy before we transfer you to Guwahati Airport (GAU) or Railway Station for your onward journey homeward with memory cards full of masterpieces.

Photography FAQs

Arunachal Pradesh is a highly sensitive border state. Drone photography is strictly prohibited near military zones like Sela Pass, Bumla Pass, and Zemithang. In other areas, you may fly micro-drones, but explicit permission from local authorities is required. We assist our photographers in obtaining the necessary clearances where legally possible.

Most standard tours rush back from Tawang. Zemithang (Monpa tribe) and Shergaon (Sherdukpen tribe) are remote, offbeat villages. They offer photographers rare opportunities for authentic tribal portraiture, traditional stone/wood architecture, and untouched landscapes far away from tourist crowds.

Absolutely! We understand that photography requires chasing the "golden hour." Our drivers assigned to this package are briefed to start early or wait for the sunset at specific viewpoints like Sela Pass, Sangti Valley, and Bomdila Viewpoint.

We recommend a wide-angle lens (16-35mm) for sweeping landscapes and monastery interiors, and a telephoto/portrait lens (70-200mm or 85mm prime) for tribal portraits and wildlife. A sturdy tripod and ND filters are a must for long exposures at Nuranang Falls and Sela Lake.

Yes, an Inner Line Permit (ILP) is strictly mandatory for Indian citizens from other states to enter Arunachal Pradesh. You do not need to worry, as our team will process the ILP for you in advance. We will simply need your ID proofs and passport-size photographs.
