Specially curated by The Holiday Trips' adventure and heritage specialists, this itinerary takes you from the ancient spiritual capitals of Central Java to the raw, volcanic landscapes of East Java.

Your adventure begins in the cultural heartland of Yogyakarta. Over three nights, you will dive deep into Indonesia's rich history, exploring the Sultan's Palace (Kraton) and the royal Water Castle (Taman Sari). A major highlight is witnessing the majestic sunrise over the UNESCO World Heritage site of Borobudur, the world's largest Buddhist temple, followed by a visit to the intricately carved Hindu temple complex of Prambanan.

Here, you will witness the rare, natural phenomenon of the 'Blue Fire' and the stunning turquoise acid crater lake. Your journey concludes with a comfortable transfer to Surabaya for your departure, ensuring a safe and profoundly memorable Indonesian expedition.

Day-wise Itinerary

Sugeng Rawuh! Welcome to Yogyakarta, the cultural soul of Java. Upon your arrival at Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA), our friendly guide will greet you and transfer you to your hotel. After checking in, spend the rest of the day at your leisure, resting after your flight. In the evening, you can take a walk along the famous Malioboro Street to soak in the vibrant local atmosphere and try some authentic Javanese street food. Overnight stay in Yogyakarta.

Wake up early for a truly magical experience. We drive to Punthuk Setumbu hill (or Borobudur directly, depending on regulations) to witness a breathtaking sunrise illuminating the misty Menoreh hills. Next, explore the magnificent Borobudur Temple, a 9th-century Mahayana Buddhist monument renowned for its intricate stone carvings and stupas. After lunch, we proceed to the Prambanan Temple complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the largest Hindu temple in Indonesia, dedicated to Shiva. Return to the hotel in the late afternoon. Overnight stay in Yogyakarta.

Monuments Covered:

  • Borobudur Temple: The world's largest Buddhist archaeological site.
  • Prambanan Temple: A masterpiece of 9th-century Hindu architecture.
  • Mendut & Pawon Temples: Ancient temples located near Borobudur.

After breakfast, dive into the royal history of Java. Visit the Kraton (Sultan's Palace), a grand complex that still serves as the residence of the Sultan of Yogyakarta. Explore the nearby Taman Sari (Water Castle), the former royal garden and bathing complex. In the afternoon, embark on an adventurous Jeep tour around the slopes of Mount Merapi. You will visit the Museum Sisa Hartaku to witness the remnants of past eruptions and enjoy spectacular views of Indonesia's most active volcano. Overnight stay in Yogyakarta.

Monuments & Nature Spots Covered:

  • Kraton Yogyakarta: The traditional Javanese royal palace.
  • Taman Sari: The historic Water Castle and underground mosque.
  • Mount Merapi Slopes: Off-road Jeep tour tracing volcanic paths.

After an early breakfast, check out and transfer to Yogyakarta Train Station. Enjoy a comfortable and highly scenic executive train journey to Surabaya or Malang in East Java (approx. 4-5 hours), passing through lush rice paddies and volcanic landscapes. Upon arrival, our East Java team will pick you up and drive you to the Mount Bromo area (Cemoro Lawang or Probolinggo). The climate will drop significantly as you ascend the mountains. Check into your hotel, rest, and prepare warm clothes for the early morning trek. Overnight stay near Mount Bromo.

Wake up around 3:00 AM! A 4x4 Jeep will pick you up and drive you through the dark to the Penanjakan viewpoint. Watch a spectacular sunrise slowly reveal the otherworldly landscape of Mount Bromo, Mount Semeru, and the Sea of Sand. After sunrise, the Jeep will take you down into the caldera. Walk (or ride a horse) to the base of Mount Bromo and climb the 250 stairs to peer directly into the smoking crater. Return to the hotel for breakfast and checkout. Embark on a scenic drive to Banyuwangi (approx. 5-6 hours), the gateway to Mount Ijen. Check into your hotel and rest early. Overnight stay in Banyuwangi.

Volcano Highlights Covered:

  • Penanjakan Sunrise Viewpoint: Panoramic views of the volcanic complex.
  • Mount Bromo Crater: Peer into the active, smoking caldera.
  • Sea of Sand (Lautan Pasir): A vast, ash-covered desert within the caldera.

Your adventure starts at midnight (around 12:30 AM). Drive to the base camp of Mount Ijen. Equipped with flashlights and provided gas masks, begin the 1.5 to 2-hour trek up the volcano in the dark. Descend slightly into the crater to witness the extremely rare 'Blue Fire'—ignited sulfuric gas burning at high temperatures. As dawn breaks, the stunning turquoise acidic crater lake reveals itself, surrounded by yellow sulfur rocks. Trek back down and return to the hotel for breakfast. After checking out, you will be driven to Surabaya, the bustling capital of East Java. Check into your hotel and relax after the tiring treks. Overnight stay in Surabaya.

Fly back with a camera full of photos and incredible memories of your ultimate Java Heritage and Volcano adventure.

Java has a tropical climate, so pack light, breathable clothes for Yogyakarta. However, for Bromo and Ijen, the temperatures before sunrise can drop to 5°C - 10°C. You must pack a warm jacket, gloves, a beanie, and most importantly, sturdy hiking shoes with good grip.

Yes, Indian passport holders require a visa. You can easily obtain a Visa on Arrival (VOA) at the airport, which is valid for 30 days. Alternatively, we can assist you in applying for an e-VOA online before your travel to save time.

While Java is famous for its local cuisine, vegetarian food is widely available. Staples like Nasi Goreng (fried rice without meat), Gado-Gado (vegetable salad with peanut sauce), and tempeh/tofu dishes are everywhere. Yogyakarta and Surabaya also have dedicated Indian restaurants.

Yes! A very popular option is to take a short ferry from Banyuwangi (Ketapang Port) across to Bali immediately after the Ijen trek on Day 6, instead of driving to Surabaya. Our travel experts can easily customize the itinerary to end your tour in Bali.
