Frequently Asked Questions
Hanle is India's first Dark Sky Reserve, situated at 14,764 ft. Because of the extremely dry atmosphere, cloudless skies, and zero light pollution, it offers some of the clearest night skies in the world, perfect for stargazing and astrophotography. You can see the Milky Way galaxy with your naked eye.
Umling La sits at 19,024 ft. Oxygen levels here are roughly 50% of sea level. It is safe if you are properly acclimatized (which our 9-day itinerary ensures) and if you stay there for a maximum of 15-20 minutes. We carry emergency oxygen cylinders in the vehicle at all times.
You don't need a telescope to enjoy the night sky; the naked-eye views are spectacular. However, for a deeper astronomy experience, many homestays in Hanle have telescopes, or we can arrange a specialized stargazing session with local Astro-Ambassadors upon request.
Hanle and Umling La are highly sensitive border areas near the LAC. Permits are mandatory and are subject to army clearance. As an authorized agency, we handle all the permit paperwork proactively for Indian nationals. (Note: Foreign nationals are currently restricted from visiting Hanle and Umling La).
